The WildStats/Call Log!
Another WildStuff Utility!
Disclaimer:
I, Howard Blake, do NOT state that this product is fit for any particular
task! You use this utility solely at your own risk and any damage done to
your computer, time lost, money lost, or ANY loss is your responsiblity
and your responsibility alone! If you do not agree to this, then don't
use WildStats/Call! You ARE stating that you agree to assume all
responsibility if you use this program and that Ken Squyres and I are
free of all responsibility/liability.
Now that we've got that mess out of the way, let me tell you about the
WildStats/Call Log program!
Version 1.3
This is a *BUG* fix that corrected a date verification routine. Error 5
(Illegal Function Call) was being displayed in the prior version under
certain circumstances. Thanks to Rex Osborn for bringing this to my
attention so I could fix it! My apologies to those of you that had this
error occur.
Version 1.2
This is a minor update that added the ability to create a Pro Stats screen.
It also fixed a minor problem with showing the callers location and counting
total calls. Also, at the suggestion of Jim Woodward, I modified the program
so that local logins are not displayed in the counts for the statistics
screens if you have the option for displaying local logins disabled. "Local
Logons" will then be displayed as "N/A". I have also changed the date
display. It is now displayed at the top of the display file, instead of
beside each caller's name and logon time (gives me more room at the right
of the screen for future additions <g>).
[ What it Does! ]
WildStats/Call will read your activity log to glean information about the
callers you've had for the day, plus statistical information about all of
your callers, starting with the first caller of the day.
- It will create an output file that you specify in the .CFG file
for display to your callers (it can be any display file you wish it to
be: a BULLx.BBS, HELLOx.BBS, GOODBYE.BBS, or whatever you wish to
name it.
- It is configurable by the SysOp to allow creation of a statistics screen
that your callers can view, or that function can be disabled. I have
mine set for WCPRO.BBS so that callers can press S at the Main Menu to
view the systems statistics for the day.
*NOTE* A future version will keep a running total, not just the current
day's info! In work now, will be complete soon. Also, this version
displays the number of events that have been ran AFTER the first call
of the new day (it doesn't count those prior to the first logon).
- You can display local logons or not, it's up to you!
- It will flag and highlight callers that dropped carrier and new users
(only if your new user security profile is named NEWUSER! Otherwise this
feature will not be utilized. It will still count the number of new
callers to your system, however).
I am thinking of having it create a HELLOx.BBS screen that will have
your new users names in it, along with a message welcoming them to
your system. Let me know what you other SysOps think of this idea.
- It will only display those calls that occurred the day the program has
been ran (it uses the date that is set in your machine and matches it
with those entered in your log).
- It will run on as many nodes as you want. Each node must have it's own
unique .CFG file and be called by your POSTCALL.BAT (or any other way you
want it to be ran - an event, whatever).
- One more little thing...If your callers have failed to put in a location
where they are calling from (the FROM field), they will appear in the
bulletin as being from <A Distant Planet>. Maybe that will prompt them
to update their records on your BBS! <g>
Ken Squyres and I developed this thing just for the fun of it! Ken wanted
certain things to be displayed in his call log display file and I wanted
some others, so you wind up with this hybrid of ours! Since Ken is in
Arkansas and I am in New Mexico, all of our planning and design work was
done over the phone so it took us a few days to finally get it to where
we wanted it (and we are still working on it, using suggestions you other
SysOps have provided, THANK YOU)! We both hope you enjoy it!
[ Installing WildStats/Call ]
Step 1.
To install your copy of WildStats/Call, unzip/arj/pak (whatever) the
archive containing it into your WildStuf directory (the same one you have
WildBull/WildNews/Style in, or put it in your \WC30 directory).
Step 2.
On the DOS command line enter:
WildSL13 /C <Enter>
This will activate WildCall in configuration mode and will prompt you to
enter the path\file name for your activity log and other important items.
The prompts are self-explanatory. Just fill in what the screen asks you
for and all will be good to go. You will be returned to DOS when it is
completed.
A couple of things I will expound on is the local logon display feature and
the Pro Stats item.
[ Local Logon ]
Enter a Y to have them displayed or N to ignore local logons. Local logons
will be counted in the tally for the stats at the end of the bulletin, but
your name, etc, will not be displayed in the bulletin's lines. If you want
yourself to show up, then simply enter a Y.
[ Pro Stats ]
Enter an "N" to disable this feature or "Y" to enable it.
*NOTE* The caller's log is NOT displayed in this file! Only the system's
statistics.
This will create a multiple page set of statistics screens that contain
a great deal of information. I put in there the things I most like to see,
but if I left out something you want it to do, drop me a note! I'll add it.
I even added birthdays to make sure that I would see that a caller had a
birthday on that date so I could send them a personal message.
You can make it a bulletin, display file, goodbye.bbs, or whatever. If you
want the callers to be able to view it from the Main Menu when they press S
for system stats, name it WCPRO.BBS and put it in your WC30 directory
(ie, \WC30\WCPRO.BBS for the path\filename).
- As mentioned earlier, the next version will keep a running tally of
your system's statistics.
Seriously, if there is something you would like to see added to this thing,
give me or Ken a call! We'll do our best to accomodate you! Anything to
make a utility better, I'm all for!
[ Running WildStats/Call ]
Now you are ready to run WildStats/Call. On the DOS command line enter:
WildSL13 <FILENAME.CFG>
If you run the executable program from one directory and have the .CFG
file in another, you will have to pass the path to the .CFG file on the
command line with the filename for the .CFG file. That's the way I
run it. I have the executable in my C:\BBSUTIL directory and the .CFG
file on a different drive in the WC30 directory. The line to run it
in my POSTCALL.BAT file is:
IF EXIST D:\WC30\ACTIVITY.001 WILDSL13 D:\WC30\WILDSL13.CFG
The program will READ your activity log and create the output bulletin
you have specified in the .CFG file. IT DOES NOT WRITE TO, ERASE, OR
OTHERWISE AFFECT YOUR ACTIVITY LOG!
Put the line WildSL13 NODEx.CFG in your POSTCALL.BAT and it will run each
time a caller logs off. Or, you can run it any other way you want (as an
event, whatever).
It has complete error checking and if there is a problem, it will display an
error message and then exit. It won't hang up your board!
That's all there is to it!
If you want to run it for multiple nodes, crank up WildStats/Call using the
/C option and create a unique .CFG file for each node.
Recommendation: ZIP up your activity log every night at midnight so that
you have a fresh one to start with each day! Since WildStats/Call reads your
entire log to get its information, the program will run faster if you keep
the activity log size down (I run it on an old clunker XT and it's still
pretty speedy!).

[ Oops! ]
When this program was originally released, it was named WildCall v1.0.
Totally unknown to me, there was already a fine program (a call-back
verifier for WildCat) with that name. My apologies to the author for
the use of the name and hence the new name for the WildStats/Call Log.
[ Program Registration ]
WildStats/Call is a companion product for those of you that have registered
WildBull/News and has already been licensed for use automatically using
your WildBull/News license number (your records at Blake Software have been
updated to reflect that it is registered to you). For those of you that
haven't yet registered WildBull/News, registration is $5.00.
It's up to you to register this. It's not crippled in any way and when/if
you do register, it won't enable any hidden features. It's up to you to
send in the bucks! If you are an honorable person you will. If not,
well, 'nuff said.
Anyway, registration will SURELY enable future features planned for down
the road...<hint>...
